Hairdressers must have a high school diploma or its equivalent, along with at least a bachelor’s degree. A license is required in many states before hairdressers can legally work. Most hair stylists are licensed by the state in which they work, but this is not always the case. Some cosmetologists also have licenses, although they usually do not do actual hair styling.

A hair stylist’s education consists of courses in cosmetology, human biology, math, physics, chemistry, psychology and interpersonal skills. It also includes training in cutting techniques, color techniques and sometimes hairstyling methods. One may obtain their license through completion of interpersonal skills and behavioral course, or through completion of a hairdressing course. Once licensed, hair stylists can perform basic to complex treatments. Some are even able to combine various procedures to achieve a particular look or effect. However, to be successful as a hairdressers, one must be extremely patient, skillful, creative, patient, knowledgeable and have excellent interpersonal skills.
